Cefpodoxime proxetil is an oral cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat wider range of bacterial infections of the skin, such as wounds and abscesses as well as bladder and respiratory infections in dogs and skin and soft tissue infections in cats. It does not treat viral or parasitic infections. Cefpodoxime proxetil requires a prescription from your veterinarian. This drug is not approved for use in animals by the Food and Drug Administration but it is prescribed legally by veterinarians.

Contact your veterinarian in the event of an allergic reaction. Do not give to animals who are hypersensitive to penicillin or cephalosporin. Cefpodoxime proxetil should be used with caution in breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs as it's safety has not been established. Cefpodoxime proxetil may interact with other medications. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if other drugs your pet is receiving could interact with cefpodoxime proxetil. Such drugs include certain other antibiotics.

The most common side effect in animals is vomiting shortly after administration. It is usually not a sign of serious disease, but indicates that the pet is sensitive to this drug.

Cefpodoxime proxetil is an oral antibiotic. Follow the directions given by your veterinarian. Keep plenty of water available for your pet to drink. Give all the medication prescribed even if your pet seems to be fully recovered. Even though cefpodoxime proxetil can be given without food, some pets do experience some digestive upset. Administer with food to lessen stomach upset.
