What is Amlodipine?

Amlodipine Besylate is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), especially in cats with kidney disease. Amlodipine requires a prescription from your veterinarian, and is sold per tablet.

The main use of amlodipine is to treat high blood pressure in cats.
It is also used as a vasodilator drug in the treatment of congestive heart failure. Amlodipine will lower the blood pressure, making it easier for the heart to pump.

Cautions:

Do not use in animals that are allergic to Amlodipine Besylate or in breeding, pregnant or lactating females and breeding males. Use with caution in animals with heart failure or liver disease and do not miss any doses, as a missed dose could result in a sudden rise in blood pressure, which can cause adverse reactions.

What happens if I miss giving a dose:

It is important doses are not missed, as a missed dose can result in a sudden rise in blood pressure which could lead to blindness, kidney damage, seizures or collapse. If a dose of Amlodipine Besylate is missed, give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not give two doses at one time.

Possible side effects of Amlodipine besylate:

The most important side effect is low blood pressure or hypotension caused by excessive dilation of arteries. This results in depression, weakness or even fainting.
Blood pressure should be monitored periodically in cats receiving this drug.
Loss of appetite may be observed and is the most common side effect.
Missed doses can cause rapid increases in blood pressure.

Directions:
